I'm cuckoo for hilarious jokes that no one has ever thought to make before!

Well, the Crisp trade happened. Goodbye, Mota.

I'm highly pleased. I see only upside in Crisp. My only regret is the loss of Kelly Shoppach. I'm not sure why I had become so fond of him. But he was home grown and ... we don't get a lot of that 'round these parts. I'm still not sure who's gonna catch Wakefield next year.

But I'm jazzed all the same. Oh, and Theo's back as GM ... which is about as surprising as Ross and Rachel getting together in the final episode of "Friends." We were all pretty sure it was gonna happen, but still happy when it did.

My other favorite baseball news of the week is that the Tampa Bay Devil Rays may be about to change their name. About frickin' time. What a moronic, non-baseball name. True, it's not as bad as Diamondbacks, but at least my team only plays the D-backs every couple of seasons.

They may just become The Rays, which is pretty good. Stingrays would be better in so many ways. Or, you know what would be even better? How about if they just close up shop and move to a city where people actually like baseball? Or not even move, how about that contraction idea? Get rid of Tampa and Arizona and let's go get some lunch.

-Read your post on the Globe Extra-bases blog...
-The thing with Kelly Shoppach is that he was one of those prospects that you thought would grow up and be the backup catcher for the club. But the Sox had other plans, they had been trying to trade him for value since July 31st, when Lucchino nixed the Shoppach for Larry Bigbie trade.
-As for the situation on catching Wakefield, you can forget Bard, who I think will spend the year at Pawtucket, unless hes somehow traded. The other two catchers going to spring training are Ken Huckaby and John Flaherty. Red Sox.com's Ian Browne has said several times that he sees Flaherty being the backup catcher for Wakefield, but Bradford (of the Salem Eagle-Tribune) reports Huckaby will.
My gut feeling is they might start the season with both men on the roster.
-Thank you for listening to my absolute random nonesense about the backup catcher situation for the Red Sox.
-Have a great morning

In terms of contraction, I am utterly and totally with you. I think the Devil Rays, Diamond Backs, and Rockies could go away and nobody would miss them. The Marlins have actually managed to put together good teams, from time to time, but their ongoing fire sale as a means to get out of Miami actually makes me want them to go away entirely.

I had a lengthy, on-going argument with a friend last year that the Orioles would be a prime candidate for contraction. He thinks I'm nuts, I think that they have poor attendance and are a non-competing wasteland for players in the twilight of their steroid-shortened careers. Especially with the Nationals now killing them, attendance-wise, it's time to say goodnight and thanks for Cal Ripken.

Thank you, um ... The Cat ...

Hank: I can't get behind any contraction of one of the original sixteen teams ... that's why I hated the proposed contraction of the Twins. Anyway, Baltimore is just a town that ought to have a baseball team, dammit. Tampa/St. Pete is not.

Now that I think about it, I guess I'd rather see Colorado go, instead of Arizona. Arizona does have something of a baseball tradition, what with the cactus league and all ... just as long as they change their name to The Snakes or The Rattlers or The Firebirds or something that sounds like a damned baseball team, for the luvva Pete.

The Twins are actually a great counter-argument. They went from bottom-of-the-barrel to annual contenders in a few short years.

I guess my question re: the Orioles is which would upset you more, having them contracted or seeing them become the Santa Fe Tumbleweeds, or some such nonsense?

I can't image that once the Angelo group is done running them into the ground potential new investors are going to want to try to scrape up interest in Baltimore.

I'd rather see them move, I guess. After all, they were the St. Louis Browns for years, so it wouldn't be the end of the world if they left Baltimore. Still, Baltimore should have a team, dammit.

Let's not forget, the O's were in first place for a BIG chunk of '05. And Camden Yards is still one of the best parks in baseball.

Besides, they're my wife and Mother-in-Law's favorite team (Amanda may be split with them and the Sox) ... and our next cat will probably be named Camden, so I have a vested interest.
